Surgeon General looks to label Apps with warning labels

Recent studies have shown that games made by Brainium Studios can aid tremendously in procrastination. There have been so many reports of people blowing off responsibilities to play Brainium’s Spider Solitaire, that the Surgeon General is taking a look into the situation.

“Before picking up my house the other day, I downloaded Brainium’s new Spider Solitaire on my iPhone. The next thing I knew, I’d killed a few hours and my house was still a disaster,” said Chad Smith. “It was amazing.”

But Smith isn’t alone. Developers at Brainium Studios have found that thousands upon thousands of users have played Brainium’s new Spider Solitaire instead of doing things they really needed to get done, but didn’t really want to do.

“It’s really helpful,” said Sarah Anderson. “I was going to do my taxes today, but instead I spent four hours playing Spider Solitaire.”

Based on the reports, the Surgeon General was reportedly set to label Brainium’s Spider Solitaire with a warning label, informing customers that the game is extremely addictive and may cause hours of procrastination. The warning has not yet been imposed, but the Surgeon General plans to put it in place as soon as she’s done playing Spider Solitaire.

Adding realistic shadows on mobile devices

While trying to improve realism in our games, we invested a substantial amount of time in physically-correct shadowing. Relying on the fact that all our graphical objects are flat, we decided to try something completely new. An optimized-for-2d shadow volume. The results were quite impressive:

Shadow volumes are a very accurate and high-resolution shadowing technique. It was used in the game Doom 3, and a screen shot from this game is displayed in Wikipedia’s article about shadow volumes. We needed to take it one step farther: soft shadows.

Cure social anxiety? There’s an App for that!

A new iPhone App is being developed to help alleviate social anxiety. Apparently, people with a great deal of social anxiety tend to focus on threatening faces in the crowd. The App shows a happy face, then a threatening face, and then merges the two together. Studies have shown that the App works, but I feel like they’re just going to make people anxious about calm people. Just what those folks need, right?

Our Apps don’t cure social anxiety, but according to a large number of reviews, they do cure boredom. Many reviews claim that a patient was really bored before playing our app, but while playing it they were not bored at all.

Today’s Deck of the Day is dedicated to my dog Dexter and the Oregon Humane Society. Just over two years ago I rescued my buddy Dexter from OHS. He is a mix of terrier, pointer, and hound, and is the best dog I could’ve ever asked for. When I adopted him he was eight-weeks old and weighed seven pounds. Today he pushes the scales at about 60 pounds. Dexter loves treats, modeling for thousands of photos, and laying on my lap while I pay Spider Solitaire!

Flaming Lips feat. Siri

It was only a matter of time before someone used Siri to make a song, and who better to do it than the Flaming Lips. The new song, “Now I understand,” features Siri and Erykah Badu. The song seems to be a shout out to Hal, the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Wayne Coyne, lead singer of the Flaming Lips, released the three-minute track as a teaser for the Flaming Lips newest project, and based on this sample I can’t wait to hear the entire album.

Speaking of music, I was also blow away by the creativity behind Bjork’s new Biophilia album/App. With the App, her new album is completely interactive. Listeners can interact with the songs and change notes and tunes. I remember reading the jackets to tapes and CDs over and over again as a kid, but this brings an entirely new and creative element to putting out an album. I can’t wait to see what others do with this type of technology at their fingertips. Who do you think would make an amazing App to go along with their new album? I’m thinking Outkast, Beck, Pink Floyd, Tool… What do you think?

Cool iPhone Cases

Lately I’ve seen some pretty cool iPhone cases and screen protectors. Here are a some of my favorite.

Gelaskins make cases and skins for your phone, and you can even upload your own photos or images to design your own. They work with a lot of famous artists to come up with their designs, and they even released a line of Garbage Pail Kids cases. This particular design is from Leontine Greenberg.

I’m a big fan of wood cases, although I don’t own one… But if I did, I would own this one! SIGNI Case has some pretty cool designs, but I’m partial to the old school cameras. Crazy to think this is the only relationship kids will have to film cameras.

I’m not saying I’ve ever done it (hangs his head in shame), but I’m sure a lot of people have tried to use their iPhone case to pop open an icy-cold beer on a hot summer day. Again, not that I ever broke a case trying to do this… But if I had, it would’ve been really convenient to have this case from Be A Head Case which has a built-in bottle opener.

Fast, Portable 2D Rendering on iOS and Android

While iOS and Android both provide suitable 2D-drawing frameworks, they aren’t the least bit portable. You’d have to write one version of the program for iOS and another for Android. The solution is to use OpenGL ES, which is available on both kinds of devices, and is super fast. It’s easy enough to find information and tutorials on drawing 3D objects in OpenGL ES. Unfortunately, many of them use methods that aren’t geared to rendering 2D objects, and for the sake of simplicity are very inefficient, suck battery life out of the phone, and make it nearly impossible to achieve complex multi-pass and off-screen rendering techniques. For top-notch gaming software, you need something substantially more sophisticated.

Let’s get ready to Jumble!

March Madness, eat your heart out! The Jumble Royal is a 64-player single-elimination tournament to find the best Jumbline 2 player in the world. The tournament starts March 1 and players will battle throughout the entire month. A World Champion will be crowned on April 1. The winner of the tournament will be awarded a new iPod Touch with the phrase “Jumbline 2 World Champion” engraved on the back. All of Brainium Studios’ Apps will be loaded onto the iPod for the winner’s gaming pleasure. We are currently accepting applicants for the tournament. To apply, simply download Jumbline 2 onto your phone or tablet and send us a screen shot of your highest score (daniel@brainiumstudios.com or leave a comment with your user name). Don’t worry, the App is free.

Here’s how the tournament will work…

• All players will start a new game in “Star Tower” mode. In Star Tower your task is to build the tallest tower you can, before it sinks into the ground, by making words out of an infinitely-jumbled line of letters. The larger the word the slower your tower sinks, so scramble and twist your brain to think big!

• Each round a player will face off against one other player. The player with the highest score advances to the next round.

• Each player will have until midnight of the final day of their round to submit their highest score. Scores will be submitted by taking a screen shot of your phone or tablet screen, and emailing it to Daniel@brainiumstudios.com. The subject line of the email will be your bracket identification code.

•The winners from each round will be posted to our blog the next day by noon.

Apps in Education

After reading a lesson plan we developed for Jumbline 2, a teacher contacted us about using our App in her classroom. Jennifer Auten is a second grade teacher with six iPads and seven iPod touches in her classroom. The following is her experience using Jumbline 2 as a teaching tool.

After trying Jumbline 2 myself, and sharing it with my middle school and high school children, I brought it into my second grade classroom. Those of us 12 and older all enjoyed the games and found them quite challenging. I could feel myself getting smarter by the minute and at the same time I felt successful, despite some frustration at not knowing all the answers. In the classroom I was looking for an app that could replace or compliment the paper Make a Word activities we do.

The classic game in Jumbline 2 is similar to Make a Word-take the given letters and make words of different lengths. Make a Word is designed specifically for the elementary school classroom and the words are based on an elementary school vocabulary. Jumbline 2 is geared for a wider audience, and much of the vocabulary was too challenging for the class. However, they did really enjoy the dictionary feature, a great touch.

Everyone loved the Star Tower game, both on the iPad and on the iTouch. Students played in pairs on the iPad, and individually on the iTouch, both worked well. Having the directions pop up before the game starts is fantastic-no need for students to hunt around for the little icon that will lead them to the help section. Most of them stuck with creating 3-5 letter words and that worked for them, they were able to keep ahead of the moving yellow line for 5-6 blocks and then they were happy to start a new game.

Pairs also played Cloud Pop, and enjoyed collaborating and helping each other out. With no prompting they took turns with passing clouds. As with Star Tower they were successful with the initial shorter words, guessed as the words grew longer, and didn’t feel disappointment when the game ended, they just started right up again. It was easy and automatic for students of different abilities to remain challenged while working with a student of a different spelling ability. We will definitely be playing more Jumbline 2 to increase spelling ability, phonics skills, problem solving, and cooperation.
